How is a
PEB Building
Designed?
A complete step-by-step guide to the Pre-Engineered Building design process — from the first conversation to handing over your completed structure.
At Thirumala Roofings — one of the most trusted names in PEB building design and construction in Chennai — we have designed and delivered 100+ steel structures across Tamil Nadu over the past 10 years. The secret behind the speed and precision of every pre-engineered building is the design process — where everything is planned and engineered before a single piece of steel is manufactured.
Why Does the Design Process
Matter So Much in PEB?
In conventional construction, workers make dozens of small decisions every single day on site — how thick should this wall be? Where should this column go? How do we fix this structural problem? These on-site decisions slow everything down and often lead to quality inconsistencies.
In a PEB building design process, none of that happens. Every single decision — every beam size, every bolt location, every roof angle — is made during the design phase by qualified structural engineers using advanced software.
By the time our team arrives at your site in Chennai to start assembly, every question has already been answered. Every component has already been manufactured to exact specifications. All they have to do is put it together.
That is why understanding how a PEB building is designed is so important. The design is where everything happens. Get the design right and the rest of the project flows smoothly.
Key Advantages of PEB Design
- All decisions made before manufacturing — zero on-site guesswork
- Advanced structural software ensures code-compliant, optimised designs
- Precise Bill of Materials eliminates material wastage completely
- Factory fabrication guarantees consistent quality on every component
- Faster site assembly — typically 3–4× faster than conventional builds
- Design follows IS 800:2007 — India's national code for structural steel
- Site-specific wind load, seismic and soil data incorporated from day one
Step-by-Step PEB Design Process
Here is exactly how we design and build every pre-engineered structure — from first conversation to final handover.
Understanding Your Requirements
The very first step in the PEB building design process is the most important — and it has nothing to do with software or steel. It starts with a conversation. Our team sits down with you and asks a series of very important questions.
- What will you use the building for? A storage warehouse has very different structural requirements than a heavy manufacturing plant with overhead cranes.
- What size do you need? Length, width and height — these three numbers form the foundation of your entire pre-engineered building design.
- Specific requirements? Mezzanine floors, industrial doors, skylights, ventilators, crane beams — every requirement affects the design.
- What is your budget? Helps our engineers design the most cost-effective building without unnecessary over-engineering.
- Where is your site? Location determines corrosion protection, wind loads, seismic zones and soil conditions across Tamil Nadu.
Site Survey & Soil Investigation
Once we understand your requirements, our team conducts a thorough site survey — not just a quick look around. This covers several important aspects that directly feed into the structural design calculations.
- Site Dimensions & Topography — Precise measurements of your site and terrain, including slopes and nearby structures.
- Wind Load Assessment — Chennai is a coastal city with strong seasonal winds. We assess wind patterns at your specific location.
- Seismic Zone Classification — Tamil Nadu falls in different seismic zones; your PEB structure design must comply with local requirements.
- Soil Investigation — Soil type determines foundation depth and cost. Soft soil needs deeper foundations; hard rock needs minimal work.
- Utility Locations — Mapping electricity lines, water pipes and drainage to plan the most practical layout.
Structural Analysis & Engineering Calculations
This is where the real technical magic happens. Our qualified structural engineers feed all gathered information into advanced structural design software, which performs thousands of complex engineering calculations.
- Primary Frame Design — Size, shape and spacing of main columns and rafters forming the backbone of your PEB steel structure.
- Secondary Member Design — Sizing of purlins, girts and other secondary structural members supporting roof and wall panels.
- Connection Design — Every bolted connection individually designed and checked for maximum strength and reliability.
- Deflection & Stability Checks — Structural stability, deflection limits and lateral resistance under wind and seismic loads verified.
- All structural design follows Indian Standards IS 800:2007 — the national code for structural steel design.
Creating Detailed Engineering Drawings
Once structural calculations are complete, all those numbers are converted into detailed engineering drawings. This is where your building starts to take visual shape for the first time.
- General Arrangement Drawings — Overall layout showing every column position, roof profile, door and window locations, and overall dimensions.
- Structural Steel Drawings — Highly detailed technical drawings showing every beam, column and connection with exact dimensions and material specifications.
- Foundation Drawings — Exact construction details for concrete foundations including size, depth, reinforcement and anchor bolt locations.
- Cladding & Roofing Drawings — Panel fixing details including edge trims, flashings and sealant specifications.
- Fabrication Drawings — Used directly in our factory — every cut length, hole location and weld shown in precise detail.
Client Review & Approval
Before any steel is ordered or manufacturing begins, we share the design drawings with you for review and approval. This is a critical step — because once manufacturing starts, design changes become expensive. We walk you through the drawings in clear, simple language. At this stage you can move a door, add a window, change the colour or modify the mezzanine layout — all completely free of cost. Once you give written approval, we move to manufacturing.
Bill of Materials & Steel Procurement
With approved drawings in hand, our team prepares a detailed Bill of Materials — a complete list of every single steel component needed for your PEB building. Every beam, column, purlin, bolt, roof sheet and wall panel is quantified precisely. This precision means zero material wastage — we order exactly what is needed, nothing more. Our procurement team sources all steel from certified steel mills to ensure consistent quality.
Factory Manufacturing & Fabrication
This is the step that truly sets pre-engineered building construction apart. Using the detailed fabrication drawings, our skilled team manufactures every component of your PEB steel structure at our factory.
- Precision Cutting — All steel members cut to exact lengths using precision cutting machinery, accurate to the millimetre.
- Drilling & Punching — All bolt holes drilled at precise locations as specified in the fabrication drawings.
- Certified Welding — All welds performed by certified welders and inspected for quality.
- Protective Coatings — All steel blast cleaned and given primer coatings — especially important for Chennai's humid coastal environment.
- Quality Inspection — Every fabricated component inspected against engineering drawings before dispatch clearance.
Transportation to Your Site
Once all components are manufactured and quality-checked, they are carefully loaded onto transport vehicles and delivered to your site across Chennai or Tamil Nadu. Every component is clearly labelled and tagged corresponding to the erection drawings, making site assembly faster and more organised. A detailed packing list accompanies every delivery for immediate verification.
Foundation Construction at Site
While components are being manufactured at the factory, your civil contractor constructs the concrete foundation based on our foundation drawings. The foundation includes precisely positioned anchor bolts that connect your PEB steel structure to the ground. The accurate placement of these anchor bolts is absolutely critical — even small errors here can cause significant problems during assembly. Our site team visits regularly to verify anchor bolt positions match the engineering drawings exactly.
Erection & Assembly
The step that never fails to impress our clients. With all components delivered and the foundation ready, our experienced erection team assembles your PEB steel structure using mobile cranes and trained riggers.
- Primary Frames First — Main columns and rafters erected to form the skeleton of your building.
- Secondary Members — Purlins and girts fixed to primary frames, creating the grid for roof and wall panels.
- Roof & Wall Cladding — Installed from bottom upward, each panel fixed and sealed carefully.
- Doors, Windows & Accessories — Installed as the final finishing touches.
- Our site engineer checks every connection, alignment and fixing against engineering drawings throughout.
Final Inspection & Handover
The step our clients love most — handover day! Before handing over your completed pre-engineered building, our team conducts a thorough final inspection: every structural connection checked, roof inspected for leak points, all doors and windows verified for smooth operation, and overall alignment confirmed. Along with your building we provide a complete set of as-built drawings, warranty documentation and maintenance guidelines.
