What Is a Sandwich Panel?

A sandwich panel is a composite building panel made of two metal skins bonded to an insulating core. The skins are usually pre coated steel sheet. The core is PUF, rockwool or EPS depending on what the building needs. The whole thing works as a single structural and thermal element, which is why sandwich panel installation replaces separate sheeting, insulation and lining work with one operation.

PUF stands for polyurethane foam. In construction, PUF panel and sandwich panel usually mean the same thing, and you'll hear both used interchangeably on site.

The panel does three jobs at once. It carries load between purlins or girts, it insulates, and it forms the finished surface inside and out. That's what makes roof sandwich panel installation faster than conventional built up roofing.

Joints and Fixing

Sandwich panels almost never fail because the panel is wrong. They fail at the joints and the fixings. A panel with a poorly formed tongue and groove joint, or fixed with the wrong screw at the wrong spacing, leaks air, leaks water, and lets condensation form inside the joint where nobody can see it. In a cold storage that means ice building up inside the wall.

So sandwich panel installation is a detailing job as much as a fitting job:

Joint geometry. Tongue and groove profiles have to seat fully. Forced joints spring back over time.
Sealant selection and placement. The right sealant in the right groove, applied as the panel goes in rather than smeared on afterwards.
Fixing type and spacing. Self drilling screws sized for the panel thickness and substrate, at a spacing calculated for wind uplift rather than eyeballed.
Thermal breaks. Metal fixings bridging from inside to outside create condensation points unless detailed properly.
Flashings and corners. Corners, eaves, ridges and openings are where most water gets in.
Panel handling. Dented or creased skins are permanently weakened, so panels get handled properly on site.

Conventional Construction

The comparison with masonry and RCC comes up on most projects. Panels win decisively on speed, weight and thermal performance, and they can be unbolted, moved or replaced, which a blockwork wall cannot.

Dry, Fast Work

Blockwork with plaster and separate insulation takes weeks and needs curing. Sandwich panel installation is dry work, so it goes up in a fraction of the time and stays on schedule through monsoon weather that would stall wet trades entirely.

Lighter on the Structure

Panels weigh far less than masonry, which means less load on the structure and lighter foundations. On an existing building that difference often decides whether the work is feasible at all.

Superior Thermal Performance

Achieving the same insulation value with conventional construction means a much thicker wall, which costs you internal floor area on every side of the building.

Can Be Moved or Replaced

PUF gives better thermal performance per millimetre, so it's the standard for cold storage. Rockwool gives much better fire resistance and acoustic performance. The right answer depends on whether thermal efficiency or fire rating matters more for your building.
It depends on the core. Rockwool performs well in fire. PIR performs better than standard PUF. If a fire rating is required for your building, tell us at the outset and we specify accordingly.
